GABION BOXES

A gabion box is a rectangular prism-shaped structure of double-twisted hexagonal wire mesh with steel wire coated with strong galvanising, zinc-aluminium alloy and/or plastic polymer, depending on the degree of environmental aggression. The structure is formed from 8x10 hexagonal mesh.

Metal gabions are widely used:

  • in the construction of retaining walls;
  • for the consolidation and conservation of slopes;
  • for the consolidation and conservation of road and rail soil;
  • in the field of architecture.

They consist of metal sheets assembled together during the production phase (using metal staples or metal wire stitches), which are subsequently folded, pressed and packed in bundles.

Once on site, gabions are filled with suitably sized stones, preferably river pebbles or quarry stones that are compact, resistant to freezing and not-brittle, to create flexible, permeable and monolithic structures. The stones must be placed inside the gabion in such a way as to ensure the correct characteristics of weight, porosity, shape of the structure, and interlocking of the stone material.

LOAD DISTRIBUTION AND WATER DRAINAGE
The gabion structure exploits the mutual interaction between stone and metal mesh. The quantity and quality of internal bindings are fundamental, as they allow the proper and effective distribution of forces and loads to the system.

Gabion walls act as support structures by means of gravity, providing a strong water-drainage function. The flexibility and drainage properties of such retaining walls make them the best choice for the mitigation of landslides of up to 4-5 metres deep.

To further increase its robustness, a diaphragm or partition may be added inside the gabion, made with the same characteristics as the gabion.
